is the only way to get transparent gifs without the white halo with the plugin mentioned in the tutorial? i want to know before i shell out $70 for it.

of course.. if someone wants to donate a copy, thats fine by me :-)

Heavens no! The tools inside Photoshop should be up to anything you need to do. I'll have to re-read doc's tutorial, 'cause I can't even remember what plug-in you refer to. More info please: what are you trying to put on a transparent bg: type? a graphic? Various strategies depending on what you wish to accomplish.

Oh, just re-read the tute. PhotoGIF is a kicking plugin, good software for sure. But if you have PS 5.5, the Save For Web function permits optimizing very well. If not, there are options....

Ive never used PhotoGIF but like Steve said the Save for web function works fine for me ...

ive tried hiding the green part, and it still has that white halo on the text itself. ive changed it to 100% web snap and everything else mentioned. im running photoshop 5.5 and export for the web just like you have listed. yes, my original "background" layer is that nasty brown color.

its frustrating the hell out of me. i tested it with just the text itself. yes it is anti-aliased.

I'm confused: if your file's background was "that nasty brown color" before you defined the transparency, where's the white coming from?

Now having seen your page it occurs to me you don't need transparency at all (if the page background is staying brown). You've got the "United Tamers" text in light yellow; the green textured shape and the brown bg. Can you make a flat photoshop file in that order? (Meaning is it still layered?) Match the page background brown and just stick the gif graphic in, no transparency. Should blend right in the with page background, no? I'm guessing that brown is NOT one of the 216 "web-safe" colors, so DON'T check Web Snap or it will shift to the closes web color.

Looks like it's going to be a neat page. Love the little dragon! Do I even want to ask what the United are taming?

when you wanna save in *.gif in photoshop (atleast 5.0) you get a gray cube with text next to it [(Default) Transparecy index color]. double-click it, select the brown color you use on your page, and everything will be allright. I don't understand, however, if you use a plain BG, why you want a transparent gif? non-transparent or *.jpg would do fine, if I look at your page. ^.^;

Dont bother with the PS export to the web function.. just export it manually and physically click away those white jaggies you are getting in the standard export window.

Go to file --> export --> gif89a export.

In the preview window, use your eyedropper tool to click on all the little white jaggies around your image in the preview window, until they all turn gray (or whichever gif background preview color you select). Then just click ok, and your white jaggies should be gone.

Well, maybe I'm wrong, but most people seem to be telling you how to export atransparent gif once you've set it up properly to be exported.

Steve, of course, nails the problem head on.

Whether you make your gif transparent, (if you use a texture bg this helps) or simply match the bgcolor of your page to a non transparent graphic, you still need to START with the same bgcolor for your graphic when making it, then remove THAT colour when exporting as a transparency.

So, I'm reiterating "Captain Curves'" point about matching your graphic background with the page background first, and enforcing everyone else's methods of transparency export.

i dont know, i think my photoshop version is broken then. i tried doing what you guys recommended and all in photoshop, but it didnt work right. i didnt get an eyedropper option or anything no matter what i did.

what i ended up doing was sending it to ulead smartsaver with the background enabled and the image flattened. i love their photoshop filter :-). they allowed me to create a new transparency mask there within the optimizer tab. i just selected the brown as what i wanted and saved it.

oh yeah, the utb is an ultima online organization i left last week. taming is a profession you can have in uo. a very powerful tamer can tame dragons to use as pets to kill monsters (or people <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif">. part of the reason why i left had to do with the fact that they chose that "crap" they pass off as a website on http://www.unitedtamers.com instead of my work. ive never realy drawn a dragon before this.

Uo, I made like 4k off that. Lots of dupe bugs, lol.
