Did you crosspost this to both the site reviews forum and the photoshop forum? If so, please don't do that. Someone moved it from the photoshop forum to this forum, where it belongs, and so there were two of them. I deleted one since they're identical.

[actually, no, it looks like someone else just deleted the duplicate before i got a chance to.]

Anyway, point is, crossposting isn't necessary and is obnoxious, so please don't do it. thanks

That's a cool thing where you mousover an image and it lights up. Is that through dhtml, or just animated .gif's? I've been seeing that a lot latley. Sorry that I don't have any advice to give, I just wanted to know about that.

Do you mind just giving me the UBB code that you've used in your signature image down below ? I can make the image appear but doesn't know how to make a link out of it.

BTW, you might be using 14k , we never had problems entering the site in morethan 120 secs. in 56k . Anyhow, I may need some speed on that when I get a chance. Tnx!

One more thing, Is this your site? >> http://worldzone.net/arts/magician/a2.htm If so, you need a SERIOUS designing / renovating to do on it ! We didn't see any productivity towards the community of WWW.

... I didn't bother either!

Anyway, nice colours and imagery. Overally it's quite nice but there are a couple of things I'd like to pick at.

The text. I think it's too small. More so, it's really hard to read on that background. The only other thing is that the site just feels really busy and congested. Again, this is because of the grid background.

blacksoul,

That is a nice bit of smoke on your splash page... but I was the one who created it.

looks a bit like this, no?

http://pages.sbcglobal.net/opowers/eyezaer/cig.gif

It is in no way, "cool" to rip even from sigs. Oh, and its background does not even match you page. at all.

If you would have asked for help with that smoke I would have been more than happy to help yah (and make it blend in with your page). But as is... Please take it down.

Wow... that is pretty bad. I don't know if blacksoulsunday is reading this, though, as nothing has changed yet on his site. The least he could do is change the title bar to "why create when you can steal?" or something to that effect.

What strikes me as most amazing here is that he had the gall to rip a graphic out of the sig of a well-known (and, as far as I can tell, being a newbie and all, well-respected) poster and then come here and ask for a site review! Now that, folks, is what I call shameless.

to be fair (if thats really right) I visited his site and I dont believe Izzay's smoke was there to begin with. I am sure I, if not someone else here would have immediately recognized it. I think that this person (rat) came here looking for a site review, hung around a bit, saw Izzay's smoke and thought it would be good to rip off! lol

I am still convinced if he/she ripped the smoke, that face on the main page must be a rip also. One would have thought that someone who could make a face like that (which I think is good ) would be able to create his/her own smoke ani?

oh well.. Izzay , I doubt this person will ever be back here to post again, so why not elevate this rip to the main forum, for some good ole Asylum retribution? heh

Yeah, the more I think about it...his name on his site is Delta V...and not blacksoulsunday. Maybe he just wanted to 'increase' traffic to his site by coming here...would explain the name.

You know, people like this really piss me off. All he had to do, was do the tut. It's not all that hard. Seems like he's just too lazy to learn it. I mean, he spend a bit of time 'ripping' the graphic, then cutting the cigar portion out of it. In the time spend to do that, he could of learned how it's done.

Also, he's pretty stupid. I mean, if I was gonna rip something, I wouldn't ask for a review of my site with the graphic on the splash page, for all to see. Let's hope that maybe, just maybe, he's not aware that what he is doing is wrong. One can always hope...and the graphic is still there...

Too bad he didn't decide to 'rip' DG...that would have been interesting....DG just seems to have a way with words...

Jesus...I just went through his site, looked at all his graphics...man, he's been ripping right and left. He's ripped from www.liquisoft.com (the 'bird' wallpaper is ripped from the graphic 'Dreams', it even has part of the liquisoft name in the graphic!). And god knows where else. He even has managed to get awards for his site!!!

I think we have a 'real' ripper here, and not just some kid playing around...and I, for one, won't tolerate that. I have informed Liquisoft of this, and the awarder of the golden award. It's one thing to make a mistake, but what he is doing here is blatant ripping for private gains...

[Long post ahead: sorry )

WebShaman: I feel your pain. Or perhaps I should say I feel a different sort of pain. Unlike most of the very talented people here, I have little to no artistic talent. I hold all of the regulars here in very high esteem, knowing that they exist on a different artistic plane than I.

I started coming to the Asylum at about the same time that blacksoulsunday (or Delta V, take your pick) started coming. I wasn't all that thrilled with his design, to be honest, but I recognized he had artistic talent that I didn't have. I bristled at some of the comments he made here and in other threads, but mainly kept my mouth shut because I was new and I didn't really know the people here (I'm still getting to know most of you, slowly but surely). But I really didn't expect him to do something like this. As a fellow newbie, in some twisted way I feel ashamed for him (as he apparently has no shame himself). It's almost painful for me.

Where I live, the idea of intellectual property rights (or whatever you may wish to call them) is still catching on. Most web designers would have no qualms whatsoever about ripping graphics from wherever they can find them. This is one of the cultural differences that I just haven't been able to adapt to. To give an example, I am currently working on a site and I was looking around for some images I could use as buttons. I found the perfect photos on another Korean website, and I bookmarked the page. Then I said to my wife, "Well, I'd better e-mail him and ask him if he minds if I use these as buttons." My wife (who is Korean) looked at me and said, "Why? He probably ripped them from somewhere else." Which is probably true, but I could not in good conscience just put them on my site without at least asking.

OK, I'm rambling here, which often happens when I'm procrastinating. But I do have a point, and it is this: there are some people out there who have no moral qualms about ripping other people's work. We may send him voodoo curses (Ahem... who, me?), we may post withering (albeit brief) comments on his website, but the fact of the matter is that all this is probably not going to bother him. He may never take down that graphic. I guess I'm really just talking to myself here, because I don't really like to hear that the world is not fair, the evil don't always get punished, and the good guys don't always win. But it's the truth.

(Just in case anyone here might think I'm overreacting, let me explain: I have chosen the path of the scholar, and the issue of intellectual property rights is one that is very important to me. When I was teaching English in Mongolia, one of my students came in with an essay that he clearly ripped straight from a tourism magazine. I gave him several chances to own up to what he did, but to the very end he insisted that he had written it. My boss was afraid of what rumors in the community might do to the school if we threw him out, so he forbade me to take any action. I threw him out anyway, risking losing my job and possibly sinking the school--neither of which ended up happening. Anyway, that should give you an idea of how I feel about the subject.)

Suho1004 if your attitude is that you can't do anything about it (ripping), you are wrong. We (the asylum) have protected our members interests before (for Doc, and for Gedadesign). And we will again (maybe in this case, for example). You say there is little that one can do against this perp? I say you are wrong. If you read my post again, you will see what can be done. And more can be done. Such things can not be tolerated. Period.

I feel that honest designers have a duty to keep this sort of stuff down to a minimum, and to fight it wherever it is encountered. To say 'nothing can be done' is defeatism. No, it's not my graphic that got ripped. But this thief is bringing dishonor on the asylum and designers as a whole. It's not really my crusade, but...I just can't tolerate such stuff.

In the words of DG...stop talking about it, and do something about it.

Nice to see that you did. Just don't understand your attitude (or convictions) in this case.

WebShaman: Wow. I stand corrected (and quite chastened). What I posted above was not what I would consider my "convictions" or my "attitude" (since I get the feeling you are using the word here in a negative sense). Chalk it up to ignorance instead. As you know, I am new around here, and I have not witnessed the events you refer to.

Actually, the wording in your post (which was only four paragraphs when I posted) got me wondering, but I really wasn't sure what you were talking about. I am not a designer myself, so I don't really know the channels one would go through in this situation. I suppose the rampant plagiarism on the web has gotten me rather depressed, which led to my post above.

I want to make it clear that my post was in no way saying that those of you who can do something about this should just sit back and do nothing. I was not trying to be defeatist. If something can be done, than I completely agree with you that something should be done (I hope that my little anecdote about my time in Mongolia showed my attitude on the matter). I know for one that I would not want to stand between you and Delta V!

I know, that's what I get for opening my big mouth on a subject about which I have no idea. Please, go do what you have to do, and don't mind me.

*steps aside for WebShaman*

[Edit]: Incidentally, I went to the Golden Web Awards site and looked at the 2002-2003 winners. Blacksoulsunday was not among them... this pretty much proves Michael's point.

Unfortunately, Michael, he did 'earn' the golden award...I checked that out and sent a letter to the webmaster there. His site is listed as winning the award (but for 2000-2001, not 2002-2003).

That really pissed me off, so that's why I implemented the rest of my mails...and really started looking through his site...

Oh, Suho1004, don't take my words so hard...I was just pointing out the flaws in your 'logic'. If you stick around, you'll see what can be done...and if you search the archives, you'll find examples of what's been done before. Many that come here don't seem to realize where they are...this is the Asylum! And we have members from all walks of life here. And some of us don't like it when someone rips stuff. Especially when it's stuff from fellow members. And, in this case, when it's somebody who supposedly came here looking for help, rips stuff, and leaves (probably laughing at our 'stupidity'. Well, he won't be laughing long...). I really don't expect him to come back...especially considering his remarks to others and then this...pretty hard to swallow, if you ask me. If he does come back, he'll definetely get roasted. And scalped.

But then, maybe he just doesn't know what he's done...yeah right, and I'm the pope.
