Well, we all love lists and I am in need of listening to something new. So I am just curious what everyone thinks
the best albums were that were released in the last year to date.

My list
1.) Interpol - Turn on the Bright Light
2.) Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
3.) Beck - Sea Change
4.) Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
5.) Sparta

Of last year? Hmm. I think the only one I bought last year was the Queen of the Damned Soundtrack. And I loved it. I'm not sure but I think that Opeth came out with Blackwater Park last year, or it could have been 2001. I'm leaning towards 2001, I'm not sure.

I must admit I am struggling - I check SoaD's Toxicity but that is listed as 2001 (how time flies) and I haven't listened to 'Steal this Album' yet so............ the only albums I can think of from the last year that don't make me want to hunt the artists down and throw them off a cliff are:

Rammstein: Mutter
Alec Empire: Intelligence & Sacrifice

That is a poor show but I always fail really badly in this list stuff kind of things and only think of the answers I would give (in an ideal world) at some later point. I might have to start working on these lists ahead of time so I'm actually prepared for these kind of questions ).

The last album I bought was in 2000--Erasure's "Loveboat." I love it. The next album I will buy will be "Other People's Songs," also by Erasure. I just don't buy (or listen to) a lot of recent albums anymore.

Yikes...

Uh...

Queens of the Stoneage - songs for the deaf gets my vote all in all.
Red Hot Chili Peppers newer one had about half an album's worth of decent stuff.

mmm...I think Cake put one out, but I haven't heard it...

can't think of anything else.

Quite.

DL: Good call on the Queens of the Stone Age - some of the songs have been played to death on radio but it still probably beats anything else released last year. The Chillies were weak this past year.

Suho1004: Joy Division? Yes!! New Order? Hmmmmmm......

Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf
George - Polyserena
Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk
Gomez - In Our Guns
Jurassic 5 - Power In Numbers

at a quick guess.

of those, george takes the cake in my opinion... they also won an ARIA for it too, which was pretty cool. (Aust Record Industry Assoc.)

OK, well, I've apparently branded myself as a weirdo for life, so I might as well roll with it.

Emps: I have to admit, the only group I've really kept up with is Erasure. I think I had New Order's Republic (1993) on cassette, but I usually just listen to Substance (1987). I have mostly every DM album (not to mention a crapload of singles) up until Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993). I'm a bit more up-to-date with the Pet Shop Boys; the latest album I have from them is Bilingual (1996), but my favorite would have to be Alternative (1995 B-side collection). Oh, and of course I have every Erasure album ever put out (and, again, a crapload of singles--my combined Erasure/DM collection takes up about twelve pages in my CD book). I'm not sure if their latest is out here yet, but I can guarantee you it will soon find its way into my hands.

I neglected to mention Yaz in my original post--any fan of the genre will recognize Upstairs at Eric's as a classic. Hmm... anything else to bolster my freakish image? I used to listen to Nine Inch Nails at university, mostly right after breakups and other disappointments, but that stopped when I learned how to deal with bitterness. I used to be into techno and trance as well, but I kind of grew out of that, too. And I do listen to whole bunch of other stuff, too, but none of it is really recent. I just happen to be partial to New Wave, that's all.

Interpol... I'll have to give them a listen, I guess. Never heard of them, though. Then again, I haven't heard of many of the groups/albums mentioned here. I guess I'm just behind the times...

Well, that depends. Does my scalp have to go with it? 'Cause if that's the case, I would have to say I'm not too thrilled with the idea. Not only would it be painful, but then I'd have to worry about bugs and infection in my head while I'm hanging up there on my cross. That would suck.

I am too far behind the times when it comes to "new" music. I suppose that has something to do with being an "old fart". I'll have to smack beaner when I get a chance But actually beaner has been catching me up on the music scene a bit here and there which is pretty cool.

That being said, I have a varied taste in music and I have a very difficult time explaining to people what kind of music I like. So I'm not going to try to answer that here but I must add that I have never heard a song by Erasure I didn't like! I love that genre.

The Johnny Cash album is America 4: The Man Comes Around and his version of Hurt is one of the great - they played the ass off Personal Jesus but Hurt is in a league of its own Now who said we didn't like country round these here parts??

Soil, Pitchshifter and Distrubed also had albums out this year but they were (as far as I'm concerned) patchy (I liked Halo but....).

[edit: Anyone listen to the Audioslave album? Soundgarden meets RatM had promise......

Now albums we are looking forward to this year is another matter:

Ministry - Animositisomina
Massiv Attack (out next week heard the whole thing on the radio last night)

and some other stuff - damn I hate lists]

[edit2: Nirvana's album was one new song 'You Know You're Right' and a greatest hits package - it clearly raked in enough money for Courtney Love to think she can act like a madwoman onboard transatlantic flights ]

Mike Patton!!! Now you are talking - I heard the (for some reason better known to themsleves) INXS asked him to take Mick Hutchence (sp? - I'm quite happy I can't spell his name) place and he said he would only do it if he was allowed to come on stage naked with a belt around his neck and they turned him down

When I saw FnM live I was seriously concerned he might end up killing himself live on stage (he kept climbing 30 or 40 feet above the stage when he wasn't actually ripping up the planking) - I think that kind of guy deserves another shot at the Big Time

Mike's work with Mr. Bungle just cements the psychosis...but he'd be incredible with Rage.

Ministry's Darkside of the Spoon was surprisingly good...but that's what...three years ago now?

As for Iggy Pop, he was grafted into Anthony Kiedis' Calivn Klein's a few years back. The transformation is still taking root.

DG: Yep Darkside of the Spoon was out in 1999. I've heard one track from the new album 'Lockbox' which has a feel of Supermanic Soul although a little darker and messier and it would probably have fitted in quite nicely on Darkside of the Spoon although it is not as good as those so I'm hoping the other songs are better.

If you can, try to catch the video to Johnny Cash's 'Hurt'. It combines him sitting in his house singing with images and footage of him from his glory days. It's certainly a hell of a lot more impressive than 99% of the videos out there today, if you can find a channel that plays them, of course...
