Interest seemed to die down with this, but I think we should still try to get this started. I'm closing the thread in the OZONES forum. Hopefully everyones already downloaded the book. If not check the FAQ's or the other thread.

At least I'm still here Downloaded and printed the first half of the manual today and will print the rest tomorrow or something...

So what is the first step? Downloading all of the needed packages and prepare a partition?

I just wanted to make a few things clear. First, we aren't building a linux server to run the Asylum on or anything like that. We're going to be building a Linux OS to run on our own computerse as either a primary or secondary OS. Second, a different partition with Linux is needed to build this. So everyones going to need at least 2 partitions, one with the original distro (mines RH 8.0) and then a second which we're going to install the LFS to.

If anyone doesn't have a linux distro check the FAQs. I've listed plenty of popular distros that you can download for free.

At this point everyone should have the LFS book. If not it can be downloaded from linuxfromscratch.org or check the FAQs for more documentation.

As of now, everyone should have or be in the process of reading up to chapter 3 in the manual. Also, everyone should have a linux distro installed and a partition for the LFS. Starting on chapter three everyone should be downloading the different packages. You can download them all in one file or seperately, it's your choice.

Slight setback here...
Found a machine to work on but either the NIC is fried or the problem is somewhere between the wall jack and the server room...

If all else fails, I should have another machine within a couple weeks, whenever we get the new windows machines in and start moving some of these older ones (that I know work) into the research room.

Hmm that is a setback. Of course if you can find *any* computer thats internet capable you can simply save all the packages onto a CDROM (assuming you have a burner) and then just copy them to the LFS 'puter. Thats assuming you don't want to spend the money just yet replacing the NIC or whatever the problem may be.

We'll have a burner when the Windows PC's come in... That's part of the upgrade for the lab. Along with a few other 'toys.'
I'm gonna look today to see if there's an unused hard drive lying around and try it the slightly more complicated way.
However, our lab is a borderline museum, so just finding a hard drive that'll hold 100Mb will be a challenge in itself. Which is why the big upgrade this semester...

Don't know how it is going for Jestah, but I'm almost finnished installing all of the static packages (part 1). I haven't had any problems yet, but it is getting tiresome to type all those commands :P Had to put the project on hold for a couple of weeks, because it was taking to much time with the exams coming up... I'm thinking of writing a short article/text/something about what I thought about the experience as soon as I'm finnished, which shouldn't be too far off...
