grin ... this is neat. i was just working on some eyes when i read dark garden's tut. i'll attach them below so you can see what i was working on. the sizing doesn't really allow for the more detailed effects that DG was talking about, but now i think i just gotta try something on a grander scale.

That was a really nifty tutorial. And a LOVELY eye!

I am too set in my ways when it comes to drawing eyes, though. I just did it the "old fashioned" way in Photoshop - lots and lots of layers and the airbrush tool. I am not 100% happy with it, but got sick of picking at it.

Schitzoboy, your "alien" eye is pretty cool. DG's tutorial is pretty fabulous, isn't it?

docilebob, I have to go with vogonpoet on the improvements of the eye. The actual eyeball is great, but the flesh around the eye (eyelid, eyebrow) needs some improvement. Eyelashes are really tricky little buggers. They need to be treated with a really delicate touch. (I think I need to write a tutorial on eyelashes! )

DB - yeah, gotta agree with the masses on that. Good start, but at the end looks like whoever that eye belongs to is in some serious need of antidepressants!

It only sucks till you practice. I've just read both threads on these eyes and now have all sorts of ideas. The first of whish is that I need a graphics tablet big time.

Here's my little attempt at the eye. It definitely needs some eyelashes and a bit more touching up but I'm hungry and want to eat.

Depth Depth Depth.

Matt, it looks good, but you need some more depth to your shadows to give the real feeling of contour and shape. Look at "bearsclover's" example of the eye, and the depth of the inner orbit. Brilliant work there describing how indented that shape must seem when the light is as harsh as the highlight areas suggest.

The one other thing to really look at, is to note how you used grey on the eyeball for shade. Bad pool my man. The eye isn't "white" per se, it's just very light toned. Any shade of light falling on the eye itself will reflect and refract. Nothing will stay monotoned or flat grey at all, unless the skin does as well, under a grey light with no other tonal lighting at all, or any white. Work on mixing in a bir of reds, yellows, maybe a slight green as compliment to the skin tone.

More depth, better use of colour, and paint what you SEE...not what you think you see.


bearsclover: Brilliant work. I wanted to make this as simple as possible so to skip the "How do I make it exactly like...blah blah blah" that becomes intrinsic here at times. Your example is wonderful though. I love the hatching along the orbit and up toward the bridge. Very nice. The piqued tones are great as well. Good usage. I'd love to see more work at some point.

Kepping this a "build it, and they will paint.." sort of tutorial was important (time constraint too) just for people to understand how to work in layer thought without actually using layers....and also avoiding too much smudge, dodge, and burn (as a lot of people are wont to do here at times)

No magic...just paint. You're definitely nailing the steps that should probably come next. Nioce to see more traditional (sic) artwork around here. You would, and hopefully will have a lot to share with the folks here, and myself.

I have been reading that right side of the brain book when I have time and am at the school Library. Its bringing back memories from my pre-highschool art classes! hehe, I had a good teacher back then... anywhooo... I ain't in any hurry, das jest gravy!

I must mention here that I am a "traditional" portriat artist. I have drawn since I was a kid, and am familiar with the "traditonal" art mediums (oils, watercolors, etc). I just got into Photoshop about 2 years ago. My Photoshop skills are not that advanced - all I did to create the eye in Photoshop was to "paint" it the same way I do with oils. With lots of layers. So naturally, I found DarkGarden's step-by-step tutorial for eyes in Photoshop to be especially fascinating! Kind of from the "inside out". Excellent!

There are some great portrait art books out there, which will help anyone to draw, render and/or paint the face with more knowledge, using Photoshop, or oil paints, or whatever. DarkGarden is totally right - it's about really SEEING what's really there, not what you think you see. Some of these books will help with that. The "Right Side of the Brain" book is a great place to start.

Oh, here's another Photoshop portrait. I did a quick pencil sketch of the face on paper, scanned it in, and then rendered over it with Photoshop. I sometimes draw the face from beginning to end with the Wacom tablet, but doing a quick sketch on paper, scanning it in and then working over it is a little easier.

Eh. I have a few anal-rententive problems with this face (I just made the guy up) but overall, it's OK.

bearsclover, do you only draw or paint portriat's or is that just what you like to do most?

Dracusis, I love portraits best, but I can paint/draw just about anything. Basically, if you can draw, you can draw anything you see. I will use a reference (model, photo) if I am drawing something that I am less familiar with. I always draw freehand, though (I'm a stickler for that).

One of my favorite things to paint (other than portraits) is landscape watercolors of Yosemite National Park.

Well I guess it is matter of practice. I have had alot of trouble getting clean results with a trackball. I have been hoping to get a graphics tablet to allow some freehand work. I don't doubt a mouse or trackball cna do a good job I've known several people that have done incredible work with them. Just not I as of yet. I never stop trying though.

You wouldn't know what to do with yourself if you weren't buried with work DG.

Think of it as me doing you a favor!
