Preserved Topic: *REALLY* old damaged picture (any advice?) (Page 1 of 1)

Hello guys!
I have this pich here, and well, any word is a short description. I would like to make it look decent

I've been using the history brush with some blurs, bur, wowo, looks like impossible.

Anybody knows some tip that would be useful for me?

Hey, Try doing an auto level adjustment first, then use the dust and scratch filter. I'm not sure an easy way of handeling the big scratch except with the clone stamp. The Photoshop WOW book has a good tutorial for damaged photos. I'll try my hand on this photo and post latter.

Are you looking for the end result to be the same size as that large pic?

This is like a little 5-10 minute thing here.
I'm sure unique problems would arise with different portions.... but sure... you can do this.
Usually when I paint, I smudge a ton. Far more than I should.
But here... I really don't see a problem smudging things over.
Smudge... touch of paint here and there to re-create any depth lost... and smudge again.
If you're planning on wanting the image at the original size, however.... this won't work out for you. But if you're looking for a 3rd of the size.... ya... maybe.

One thing to add to michael's post - with an old phot like that, there is generally a good deal of texture that will be lost when you smudge and paint. I find that a very slight use of noise helps add it back in. Or some good custom brushes that have a little texture built in.

Yea... DL is absolutely right with that...
Othewise you come out with a rather surreal "mask".
It'll look like a painting rather than a picture.

Personally, I would zoom in and use a small clone stamp to remove the scratches. It should not be too hard, since there is nothing major missing (like a whole eye, or something like that).

I think you have a bigger chance of keeping it looking like a photo if you do this. Michael's method might yield the most "perfect" result, but like he said, there is a risk of it looking like a paiting rather than a photo.

I would do it at 200%, and with a small clone brush that is not too fuzzy.

This can be done with the clone tool, levels, and a bit of re-texturing, but inventing a Time Machine, and going back to re-tale the picture would prolly be quicker..

Ok guys, this is what I did, I did it 'on the fly' so the proccess can be inproved (me think) I use the old-wakkos method mentioned in reitsma's links and improved it with the Zox tampon tool tip.



The final result is here still i have to make more retouches with the tampon, paint a little here and there, but that's the idea.

Any other Idea? Details to add?

Well, I can't help you fix your image, but I thought you might be interested in this. I was practicing on your picture to see if I could fix it (my new project ), and I found a cool way to make a ragged leather texture.
I would post it, but I want to make sure first that you aren't too offended... I'm sorry if I have.

Here's the skinny...

1. If you haven't done so already, download the larger image made available at the top of this thread.
2. Image > Adjust > Autolevels
3. Duplicate the Adjusted Layer (Call it "The Effect")
4. Filter > Noise > Dust & Scratches (Radius 12, Threshold 0)
5. On your layer named "The Effect", change the blending mode to Difference (Tada, leather!)
6. Select All, Copy Merged
7. File > New and then, Edit > Paste
8. Fiddle with Image > Adjust > Colour Balance

There ya go!

Apparently we can't just click on the image, is there a page that you setup with the images on them? I'm interested in seeing what the final result was.
