Preserved Topic: Coloring an image (Page 1 of 1)

This is my first ever attempt at coloring an image but I'm not too happy with the results. I was wondering if anyone has some worthwhile resources in improving coloring techniques. I searched google but couldn't really come up with anything worthwhile.

Any tips?

Crap.

I just realized how many pixels I left white, my coloring of the blood black, and part of a hook the tanish color.

Please no comments on them, obviously I'm aware.

Thanks mahjqa this is exactly what I was looking for. One question, where exactly is Preserve Transparancy in PS 6.0? I think they changed it and its not something I use on a regular basis. Unless of course they didn't change it and I'm just blind.

Its up at the top of the layers tab... one of the little boxes just to the left of the 'lock' box.

It is the left most check box in the layers window .....nice work like to see it when it is all colored and done

I was going to say a few things about this last week, but I'm too lazy.

1) Solid colours and black lines
2) Shaded colours and black lines, or less pronounced black lines
3) Shaded colours and no lines

Right now I'm somewhere between 2 and 3. sorceress.jpg is my latest go at it. My general approach is to lay the neutral colours, then extreme highlights/shadows, then work from there. Sometimes I'll work the shading subtly to the highlights/shadows. Depends on my mood.

When Weadah mentioned the Alt trick for temporary Colour Picker, I got into the habit of a seperate layer for a mixing palette. Works like a charm as long as I can keep it out of the way, which can be annoying at times. Sometimes my mixing palette is a seperate document.

Seperate layers for major elements is good. I usually paint outside the lines and then use a Layer Mask to clean it up. This way I can use different tools, such as Smudge, without having to worry too much about the background colour messing it up. Preserve Transparency as well.

mahjqa: That is a great link. I have never really tried to draw much less Anime. Great tuts! I think I will have to start doing some. Yep, going to start today!
