Hello

Im working on this project where Im supposed to -according to expectation- achieve a tunneleffect; make graphic look like it's zoomed out.

My first experiment of course involved the radial blur filter, but didn't obtain the wanted effect...well you all know what it looks like after applying it at maximum effect/zoom, so I moved on with the displacement filter, but honestly I haven't quite figured out this filter (yet). I did go through Steves outstanding tutorial on ths topic (severel times) and managed to design a DMap which I thought would obtain this inverted-sphere-kinda effect.....but...well I didn't succed .

I some of you still can't imagine the effects I'm after, think of a binocular that you flip 180 degrees and now look through it from the rear end; it's this zoomed-out effect Im after.

Hope some of you have an idea of what Im after (and a method on how to do it )

Sincerly
Rasmus

I appreciate your help on this topic mbrigde, but Im afraid the effect Im hunting is a much much more heavy/strong zoom effect.

Well let me be more specific: Take any picture. Somehow I want a certain area of this picture to be gradually zoomed out...imagine the viewer is looking at this area with a flipped 180 degrees scope......argh I obviously find this very hard to descripe .

Hmm. When I think about it I guess the effect you achieved is not so bad after all...If you somehow could extend that "zoom tunnel" into a more tunnel realistic way (add some more depth perspective)...well then you got the effect Im after.
As I mentioned before I've allready tried the radial blur filter, but the effect gained by this method lacks of a strong depth perspective (If you know what i mean).

Hope this nonsens cleared some things up.

Just gave a another go with the radial blur. I was able to move closer to the tunnelvision, but still the graphic requires much more perspective.

I haven't experimented yet, but would it be possible to create a narrow (wide front and narrow end) tunnel using gradients? If it was, someone (or something) might be able to combine the blur and the gradients? Argh I dunno, Im tired. I know play/fiddle/learn is the solution to many things, but when you are stuck you really are stuck (the story of my life ).

Wow. Anybody else getting mixed signals?

"Somehow I want a certain area of this picture to be gradually zoomed out"
Hmm... that sounds like a variation on the Diplace stuff I just did.

I'm gonna sit on my hands for a bit on this one.

Erhm, ok the description of the requested technique/effect was far from satisfactory...but mixed signals??

Are you referring to your Shapeshifter method? -If you are I did read it and experimented a bit, but as Steves tutorial, none of you mention how to design DMaps for this purpose.

Yeah, mixed signals. Binoculars, 180°, tunnel vision, etc. -- I'm at a loss. Several of your descriptions seem to go in several different directions.

Yes, my recent ShapeShifter can be used for zooming as one of your descriptions suggest. All you have to do is invert the Layer Mask, R channel, and G channel. That will zoom zero in the center and more on the outside, but it won't blur like Radial Blur.

Try this. Take a photo and run Filter > Distort > Polar Coords and use Polar to Rectangular. Then run Polar Coords again, but this time use Rectangular to Polar. Is that close to what you are trying to do?

I replace my old picture with a new one using WJ's displace method. I think this is more what you're looking for.

LOL mbridge. Good show, and I think you only have to invert the Layer Mask. I have this bad tendency to save Untitled-1.psd all the time, which only serves to confuse me at times. So I think I made another boo-boo in my above post with regards to inverting R & G. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's a boo-boo.

Sorry I haven't been able to answer before now, but I had to get my 5 hours sleep.

WJ => LOL, and I thought the use of the "flipped 180 degrees binoculars" would make everything seem a bit more clear. Heh, well "me no english man"; a problem I seem to trip over too many times.

No, Im sorry Journal, but the effect you've obtained is not recessed enough, I like it though.
Ohh, If Photoshop just had somekind of an z-axis editing utility filter like the 3Ds' software, it would all be a hell lot easier...

mbrigde=> Terribly exciting! ~the impatient kind of smooking~

Edit:: Duh! Didn't see (nor read) your comment on replacing the blurpic with the displace flower. Damn it's sweet (and usefull). Looks like gel or soft glass. Please show how you DMap is put together mein herrn ( )

Even though my above example isn't *exactly* what you are looking for ("not recessed enough"), I suspect you can use the technique to get *exactly* what you are looking for. It's a real simple trick involving Polar Coords that I showed to Kruzr many moons ago, and can be used to recess as much as you want.

I'm pretty pissed right now over this, so I'll leave it at that. I've definitely got more to say, but maybe I'll get lucky and some of the calmer folk will pick up on it and say something before I do.

Polar Coordinates (rectangular), rotate canvas, motionblur or wind, polar coordinates?

It looks nice when I run this filter combination on any pic, but was this what you had in mind? -it doesn't look like your Tom Hanks displace/shapeshifter tunneltry

That's not how I did either graphic.

!) Polar Coords
@) Square Margue -- horizontal all the way across using various heights -- guides/grid come in very handy
#) Free Transform -- top and bottom edges
$) Repeat @ and # as necessary
%) Polar Coords again

When you do steps @ and #, play with the height of the selection and the amount of Free Transform.

A lot of cool things can be done with this technique.

No, that`s something completely different.
1) Just select working layer, copy,(CTRL+C),
2) paste ( CTRL+V)
3) CTRL+T, numeric transform to 90%,
4) Select the new image,
5) repeat steps 1-4 until you are at the size you want in the center,
6)Paste visible into new layer ( CRL+ALT+SHIFT+E)
7) Light radial blur ,Zoom.

In this one, I had to copy the bg in the final, flip horizontal, and set to screen, `cause the entire right side was black, due to the black in the orig.

Oh dammit, this is one of those things that just won't leave ya alone isn't it? I need a tunnel to look at now. Here's a far from perfect attempt. Stayed away from displace cause I'll get lost for days in there and this is not a good time for that. Tech slop is very cool btw WJ, some choice morsels there. PO- if this is what you're after I'll try to remember how I got there.. mostly gradients and various blurs amd such.

Scope

I'll give WJ's and Bob's last methods a go now.

cyoung => Tnx for trying, but your "tunnel" lacks of perspective (you know, a recessed "core")
