I was stuffing round the other night doing some painting in PS and I ran into a wall.

Grass.. Like a plane of low cut grass in perspective that is, how would this be accomplished?? Well, I tried, I failed. I tried again, and then I failed again.. :

Playing with noise and median and the smudge tool and overlaying gradients, I couldn't pull off much myself. This grass (if it can be called such) is pretty tall too. Oh well. I guess what I'd like to know is how big this thing is supposed to be in relation to the grass.

Lovely. The color is fucked. I love the web

Or this, maybe ?

To get this, you

fill new layer w/black
filter>>add noise ( about 10, mono, gauss )
rotate 90, clockwise
fliter>>stylize>>wind from right. Three times.
filter>>distort>>ripple About 10, medium
image>>rotate>>60 CCW
Image>>adjust>>hue/sat colorize, 144, 66, +10
TADA.

Lots of room to play here. With all the settings .
Hope this helped.

Even if you win the rat race, you`re still a freakin rat.

nice Bob.. needs more perspective ( depth.. as in a horizon me reckons), plus some randomness to the direction of the blades of grass to give it some irregularity.. but heck.. better than I can do at the moment.. I need to paint it and not.... ~Vp~

edit: had a go anyhoo..

Absolutely right VP. This was just a quickie. You can free transform for perspective, cut in a horizon, or background, adjust curves to bring up the darker areas. This is a really flexible trick. longer grass ? use more wind.
less noise (or adj levels ) colorize w/ blue, rotate 180, looks like rain.
Instead of colorizing run polar coords. retangular to polar, convet to indexed color, image>> mode>>color table>>Black body, and it`s a fair explosion.

Lot`s of room to play, here

<Edit> the random factor you get with the brush is nice</edit>

DG recently instucted me to paint more and use filters less. It's some valuable advice.

Grass really shouldn't be that tricky to paint. Just grab the airbrush, set it to 100% opacity with a medium green, give it a pressure fade of 30 pixels, and start making strokes. Change greens here and there to get some nice texture and color difference. That's it.

Here's a thirty second example:
