Play play play. Fiddle fiddle fiddle. Learn learn learn.

I have been looking for a tutorial on making gears for some time. Finally I had arrived at NeoFrogs place and found one. Then, on the same day, I had come across another gear tutorial that was the same thing. Is there no end to the copy layer / transform method?

Sure there is. Rather than write up a tutorial and send you to it, I have zipped up a PSD and uploaded it. I know, it's not quite the same, but I'm sure damn near all of you folks can figure it out.

All it really took was some creative use of grids, circles, polar coordinates, and some very savy channel operations. I prefer this method as it allows more control over some aspects right off of the bat. Like the spacing and number of teeth. But alas, it does have draw backs over the other method.

The PSD isn't the cleanest, but it gets the method across for those of you willing to take a peek. Once you get the final alpha, dressing it up shouldn't be problem.

Animated gears, ripped from a photosgraph, for one of the departements here in the swedsih government. No real help for how to do gears, this just reminded me of a headache I once had! :-)

I made this a couple years ago... not too helpful for what you're asking, but it's kinda neat nonetheless. It's just a circle with squares on the edge, given a metalic texture.

{Edit: It looks a lot better on a white background.}

There are two easy ways to achieve gears, in my opinion. Create a bar in the center and duplicate and rotate it like 10 degrees or something over the span of the 360, then add a circle over it all, or cut arcs out of a circle....

Jestah, what the fuck are you talking about. That sig is at least 400x400.

Sorry, Sloloem. I left out one little detail. Check the alpha channels and you will see. There is one standard and two simple variations. However, like I said earlier, it's not the cleanest. The grid I used wasn't evenly divisible by 3 so on one part of the gear it's kind of lop-sided.

Remember, some basic alpha channels, a polar distort, and then some savy channel ops. I'm not one for writing tutorials, but you should be able to figure it out. Sorry for the inconvenience.
