hi there...

I just noticed and started playing w/ the NS4's layerObject.load() method! it's so nice!

you can use it especially w/ server pages (PHP, asp, cfm, ...) . In the past i used to create a frameset with 100%=my whole page and *=dataframe to do such things..but now, if you want to have a javascript variable updated from another file...just used the load() ...

as for dom2 and ie5, you can still use <iframe> with its style as hidden, you can set it's src property during runtime and read the new content via innerHTML !

I found it usefull...and thought to mention it even if most of you probably know it...

We have done so.

lallous: I've been meaning to look into NS' layers as an alternative to IFRAMEs for NS4.x as IFRAMEs degrade appalingly so I would be interested in an example too if you've got one.

Thanks for passing that on.

Here's an example...it demonstrates only NS4...as for IE5 or dom2 it is easy with the use of hidden iframes.

So am I reading this correctly that we now have a spiffy way of loading external pages into our spiffy little dHtml draggable boxes in IE *and* NS4??? Is this the Holy Grail we have sought for oh so many days and nights?

well yes Bugimus!!

I was looking for that too! and I found it!

NS4 uses layerObj.load()
IE, dom uses <iframe src=....?query style='visibility:hidden'>

just nice! You can have a single dHTML file that can query database even post data/retrieve data w/o even reloading the whole page! just play with that layer source and you read or write!

I can replace the dataframe from my site with that method...just double click any word on my site and see what happens....I use LEO's dictionary for that...

Yeah Bugs...That is what I was looking for. Now I have my answer that we were discussing in a previous thread.

This is going to be really cool! I can't wait

This is all very interesting I'd been planning on something putting IFRAMEs in NOLAYER tags but hadn't got around to looking into getting the layers working fine and I think lallous has pinned it down nicely - I could imagine this would be very useful for PSPong allowing the reloading of certain sections without having to update the whole page.

Thanks for passing that on,

yeah, that seems interesting but how manz surfes use NN?
IMHO we shuold only program sites which work and look the same on bth of the 2 main browsers. even if NN is used by 2% or so.
Personally, I played around with that too and it pretty cool, but the fun ends where the drama starts:
the incompability of the browsers and I really long or a standart or something.
(They tried but it's still far from done, huh?)
