I need to recover files from a drive that was formatted by winxp's quick format or whatever during install. I know, I know... i'm a friggin retard. I just wish I could turn back the clocks and unplug the drive completely before letting winxp format the WRONG drive! I'm not having a good night (morning) and I can't loose everything I've done in the last year or more! I know I won't be able to recover it all, but god am I hoping i can get some of it back.

this is just awful.. someone please help me !

The poster has demanded we remove all his contributions, less he takes legal action.
We have done so.
Now Tyberius Prime expects him to start complaining that we removed his 'free speech' since this message will replace all of his posts, past and future.

OnTrack datarecovery
Partition Magic Lost and Found
File Scavenger
Tiramisu
.

.
All these tools will help you recover

Ini, thanks for the runtime.org link...i thought their products were for free!
And yes data will remain shattered in the hdd for years...but there are softwares called "Wippers" can remove the trace almost completly!
I made a tool like not that advanced (back in 1997), that zero's the file (overwrite with zero bytes) before it deletes the file.

Hmmm...that what Ini says is actually correct. As I was in the military, all HDD that were no longer 'useful' had to be destroyed...it was the only way to be absolutely sure that the data on them was non-recoverable...and I mean totally destroyed...until nothing but dust was left...

So no Petskull, short of actually destroying the HD...there is no way that I know of that can completely 'erase' the info.

If Windows formated it during install, I could get large parts of the data back using nothing but my old trustworthy diskeditor and a large amount of time. But it's complicated and requires... work. baeh. (baeh can usually be neutered by the usual green stuff...)

so long,
I hope you get your data back,

thanks guys...

I'm still in shock.. the drives were set properly as master and slave - in bios they were listed as I wanted them ( the disk for windows to be installed on was the primary master, the data disk was primary slave).. the winxp install didn't give me a chance to check where it was installing to, and it SHOULD have gone to the proper disk... Once windows was installed, it didn't even see the drive that I intended to install it on... I have no idea what the hell happened, but I don't care right now... just want as much as I can back.

.... if there was a bunch of old crap system files at the beginning of the disk, do you think that that is where winxp would install physically on the disk... leaving most of the rest of the disk recoverable???? I don't want to buy a program then not get anything back.....

what do you think is the BEST program above... its ntfs disk, and was before the incident too... I'll probably need to recover it over lan to my laptop (for disk space).

I'm looking at the Runtime Software one now....
