with Firebird.

I hate Flash because one never knows if it's just a simple something or something that's going to eat your CPU cycles. Then I installed a plug-in and now I have a button replacing automatically all flash stuff and all it takes is to press this button to make the flash thing works again. Cool !!

What in the hell was I doing using that stupid IE browser !!!

Nothing wrong with Flash movies (or anything else for that matter) using CPU power as long as you have CPU power to spend. If you're browsing through a page looking for some simple instructions while Photoshop and Flash are running in the background, the PC will almost stop if you enter a web page that uses a lot of CPU power. But if you go to the page to view that thing, then it is nothing wrong with using all of that CPU power since you're expecting it.

Converted to FireBird recently as well. Didn't notice much difference from Mozilla, but the tiny pieces that where different were enough to make me change

I just downloaded Firebird because of Viol's last thread about it and I'm close to pushing the button to making it my default browser soon too. I was pleasantly suprised to find that Firebird had already converted my IE favorites and they were there waiting for me already.

I too have been a Crazy Browser user for quite a while now and I'm liking Firebird better already. I don't think there's any functionality that CB has the FB doesn't and some which FB does better. I really like the fact that you can set your home page to a folder of links so if you have say 3 or 4 forums you look through all the time you can put them in one bookmark folder and then set that folder as your home page and they will all be open in tabs waiting for you when you crank up the browser.

BookmarkPriest is the best. Converts in any direction between Netscape/IE/Opera.

Mozilla (and firebird) automatically import your IE Favorites.

Look under bookmarks and you will find a folder named (aptly enough) Imported IE Favorites (as Butcher stated).

I plan to re-install my W2K, and think I'll put Firebird as default browser, and get rid of that Outlook crap and use Thunderbird. Nonetheless I admit I'll use IE since it's still faster for some heavy DHTML stuffs.

I still use IE to read the news in the nytimes.com site.
It's because IE already has my wife's registration password stored and I am too lazy to ask her again her password (she never remembers it also) and too lazy to register myself..
Can you believe it?

I recently d/led Firebird too, I was pretty impressed with it, but I still need to use IE for certain sites as their d/ls mess up in FB.

Well, the thing is, is that I already have installed Firebird and it imported my old Favorites. Never really used Firebird and would like to transfer all my new Favorites over to Firebird. Make sense? That's why I was looking for the app.

Ah I see - hadn't thought of that....

I used to use a program called "syncurl'

I beleive it is still avaialable...should be able to grab it from Cnet....

CPrompt: IE's favorites are stored as plain shortcuts in a folder like C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/Favorites/ while FB's ones are stored as a list of descriptions in a folder like C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/Application Data/Phoenix/Profiles/default/xwrzaraz.slt/bookmarks.html. So at worst one ( eventually me ) can do a script to parse IE's favorites and generate an html fragment to paste in Fb's favorites list. In fact, I think I'll go that way since a little more fun than searching/using an application

Downloaded it and much to my shagrin ctrl+o opens the open box but it will not let me type a URL in there. I simply can't use a browser that makes me click in a box before I can type in an address, thats why I stoped using netscape to begin with.

Why Crtl-O? Just press F6

I'll give this alt+d a shot, gonna be hard to kick my ctrl+o habit though, it's all muscle memory now

I've been playing with Firebird a bit ever since I downloaded it to do some testing. I really like it and have started to use it more and more. The tab system is sweet and I like the pop-up blocking.

My only issue with it is that my "Cruise Down" button doesn't work in it. I have a Logitech mouse that has an extra button above and below the scrollwheel. For the down button doesn't work in Firebird. The up button works fine.

Just a general note... if there's any feature you wish that Firebird had, be sure to check the Extension Room. More often than not, they've got what you need

I use a trackball, by Logitech, that also has the two cruise buttons on top and below the wheel, and both work fine with Firebird.

I'm using three extensions for Firebird: one to allow me to open a link in "this" window, one to save and store a session - the set of open tabs - and one to make all flash stuff to become just a button.

the only thing i don't like about firebird is that it takes forever to bookmark anything
i love the fact that flash is included, as i don't have to click no when playing games with flash banners! (dowload flash by macromedia? NO!)

Another good point for Firebird 0.7 is the StyleSheet switcher that appear in the bottom left corner when a page have some alternative stylesheets.

oh, i got a short question to this. how do i have to insert my stylesheets so that they appear down there? i am using ala's JS. styleswitcher

mas: Apparently, all you have to do is put "alternative stylesheet" in the rel attribute of the link tag. Just like that:

<link rel="alternate stylesheet" title="my other stylesheet" href="other.css">

<link rel="stylesheet" title="my primary stylesheet" href="primary.css">

And, the style switcher icons will appear on Fb0.7. Notice that you can split your stylesheets in several CSS files, and Fb will group them according to the title attribute of the link tags.

I dunno about you guys. But I'm pretty excited. Not just because I have FB and love it, but because it looks like its gaining a lot of new users. Finally a browser (and an open source one at that!) is gaining steam against IE.

I'm happy about the growing popularity of FireBird, but I fear it won't go outside of the web professionals microcosmos until famous websites ( I think to google, AOL & TW websites, yahoo, amazon ... ) explicitly promote web standards and fight the lack of compliance of older browsers. The mass public is not even aware of the crap they're using and that there's some excellent alternatives.

You have a very good point Poi. I myself am too afraid to install FB on my mother's computer for fear she constantly be calling me up asking whe ebay stop working or other such problems. However, its the microcosm of web pros that BUILD the web, and they'll probably want the sites they make to work correctly on their default browser as well. So I now have faith! and a kickass browser

Anybody besides me having problems getting FB to properly open .asx or .wma files? It gives them both to me in plain text.

Anyone besides me having FB 0.7 display ugly grey <hr>s in the asylum? They used to be orange... *sigh*

For the record:

1) I hit CTRL+o, and it works the same as it always has in any other app...I can type away without clicking anywhere.....


2) Firebird (along with Mozilla and NN) will render HR's here wrong because they are not formatted to account for the way these browsers deal with HR's color.

IE uses color:color; to define the HR, whereas mozilla uses background-color:color;

Hmmm, I remember they showed up orange in 0.6, but not in 0.7. Maybe they changed it. Or maybe I'm losing my memory...

I've had problems with .asx and .wmv's as well butcher. They open as plain text for me too.

Guess I'll have to keep IE around for just such emergencies.

Dang, and here I thought it was only Lacuna who's been set ablaze by the Firebird (sorry, a bit short on metaphors today). Now the only question is whether or not all this enthusiasm will be able to overcome my intense laziness when it comes to installing a new browser...
