Hi,

I am designing a catalog however the photos have a background, for
example the pictures are of shoes but i can see the table the shoe is
sitting on and the background behind the shoe, is there a way to cut
the shoes out in Photoshop so the background is removed?

Thanks

sure. There are about a dozen different ways to approach this depending on the picture at hand.

You could use the the polygon lasso or the magnetic lasso, you could add a layer mask and paint on that,
you could copy the layer and play with the various functions under image/adjust to generate a mask (and apply that),
you could use the extract tool... and next time photograph it might be a good idea to photograph
the shoes on an background which makes cutting out even easier.

so long,

Alex, as mentioned - there are two general methods for print transparency with Adobe software:

1. A flattened (not transparent in Photoshop) EPS/PDF/PSD/TIFF with a vector clipping path

2. A transparent raster layer, with raster transparency where required, often in PDF/PSD/TIFF

Method one will require a good path and creates a hard edge, however it is almost problem free on most PostScript RIPs.

Method two can have soft/gradated transparency and will need to be flattened before or at print time for a PostScript output device. Results vary between different RIPs and the Adobe Transparency flattener in Illus/InDesign/Acrobat Pro and results are not always predictable.

Photoshop also has an Assistant/Wizard to walk new users through creating transparency.

EDIT: The transparency Assistant/Wizard appears to have been removed in CS or later, I am sure it was there in version 7 or earlier!

Hope this helps,

Alex, you obviously did not get the responses here that you wished - as you have cross posted this to the Luminous Landscape forums, without mentioning that the question has also been asked on another list/s.
