And I must say, the first ten minutes have been nice

No acid3 yet, but poi has already told us why.

Switch now, enjoy quick full text search in the last few hundred pages you visited,
and don't forget to turn off the 'fraud protection'

so long,

had some weirdness installing it on Debian Etch. Said that it installed but also at the top of the installer it said "Error: conflicts with the installed package : Opera". I didn't have another Opera install. It installed though... It also didn't create an icon for me so I had to start it from command line, but that might resolved if I reboot.

Looking around in the about:config I can't find the place where I can set it to select the text in the address bar when I click on it. you have to manually set this in FF also which is just weird, but oh well.

Nice looking interface though. Think I'll play around with it a bit and see what happens.

Why did they make it so the selected text background and foreground are set and not use the system colors?

I only tried 9.5 on XP and Vista, so your mileage may vary, but here are my impressions and some a few informations:

  • About the new default theme: Simply put, this is the first time I ever keep a default theme. Bye bye Fisher Price look & feel. Welcome slick UI. Sure it has a few inconsistencies here and there but it is MUCH more inviting than the old one ( which never stayed more than 1 minute on my various installs ). I regret a bit that the Tabs toolbar has not been thought to work vertically ( when positionned on the Left or Right ). Wide screens are rather common nowadays and vertical screen estate becomes scarse compared to horizontal one. Well either that, or I'm getting old.

  • The Quick Find ( aka the Awesomer address bar ) just feels natural. The indexation of the actual content of the pages ( which you can disable if you will, in Preferences > Adavanced > History ) makes a BIG difference over what we've seen in the past.

  • I don't remember that in 9.2 the page Info panel listed the Navigation links, Style sheets, Scripts and IFRAMEs. This is quite useful to analyse a page and block content. Although for content blocking I would like to have a "Block Content" entry in the contextual menu when clicking the links in the Info panel.

  • DragonFly ( in Advanced > Tools > Developer tools ) is finally out in the wild. Being in alpha, it's not yet possible to edit things live. However being able to inspect the CSS, DOM, objects and scripts and set breakpoints in web pages and widgets is a life saver for web developers and designers. Exit the old school error console debugging.

  • Link now synchronize the Notes, which can be useful to synch a ToDo list, a Shopping list, or a monster post on the Asylum without even thinking about it.

  • M2, the built-in mail client, now uses its own thread to not choke the browser when fetching big mails/feeds or doing IMAP transactions. Notice that on first start up after upgrading from 9.2 the mails are converted to the new format. This can take a while if you have thousands or hundreds of thousands of mails.

And of course, there is the better standards support and the speed improvements. Clearly I'm glad 9.5 is out. It's a LOT better than 9.2.

I'm also looking forward to FireFox 3, scheduled for June 17th. They've done a tremendous job since FF 2.

Tyberius Prime: 83/100 on Acid3 is still respectable. There was some discussion at work today about enabling the Fraud Protection by default. And I'm convinced this is a sane default. Those who really need this protection would most likely not be able to fiddle in some menus to enable it. The others, the nerds like us, will find their way in.

CPrompt: These sound like Unix specific bugs as I've not had such problems.

I fixed most of my issues with it, but I have to do that with FireFox too so it's not really a big deal. The widgets used for Opera in Linux are not my favorite (tcl/tk I think??) But no big deal. I just made a launcher for it for now.

I just wish Opera would allow me to use Link to synchronise actual sessions, not just bookmarks etc. I use sessions a LOT. I have maybe 2-3 nondefault bookmarks in Opera though. (I'm using Opera as my surfing around browser, Firefox as my blog/webcomic reader, and Safari as my quick-to-fire-up-if-I-have-no-browser-already-open one shot browser.)

Just noticed that the Awesomer bar also indexes the description one give to his bookmarks ... just like the tags in FireFox 3 and you can search/filter the bookmarks by their description in the Bookmarks panel.

And the indexation of the content of the pages is also in action when you search/filter things in your History panel.

Sweet! I've not tested all the methods but Safari 3.1 and Opera 9.5 support the Array extras introduced in JavaScript 1.6 by Mozilla. Cool to see these helper functions becoming a bit more mainstream.
