Well, since we're a week in to July as it is, and since we're always flexing graphical muscle in Javascript, I figure why not try something else for a change?

For this Javascript contest, you have to do something with text. Anything. From an artistic piece combining text in different ways, to kinetic poetry, to story-writing AI, anything is fair game. Bonus points for interactivity and/or creativity! I'm pretty certain I'll be doing one myself here, too.

To get the creative juices flowing, here are a few examples of ideas that can be considered fair game (though they aren't javascript, sorry):
The Space Under the Window - Andrew Plotkin
Emotion Fractal - Jared Tarbell
Illustrating a Story - Ken Perlin
Kinetic Poetry - Ken Perlin
Intersection - Zach Lieberman

Hope that sparks your imagination!

You all know the rules by now -- 20 lines of Javascript, no more (though I'll let very creative entries slide on that ). I'm looking forward to entries, and hopefully you all can look forward to an interesting one by myself as well.

Cool topic and examples.
If I work insanely before the Assembly, I should go in Helsinki with the hands in the pocket and spend some time on an entry ... *crossing the fingers*

Alas, there is no American demoscene.

Is there some low cost planes between the US and Europe ?
There's been few parties in America, but it's clear that 99.9% of the demoscene is European.

I'd imagine so, but the time/energy/monetary-cost of going to Europe offsets the benefits too greatly.

You should try to hit 2 birds with one stone. Come in Europe for 2 weeks, and spend the middle week end at a demo party.

Yep I'm going to Assembly, and no, there's no way for me to pay ~400? ( plane + insurance + oldschool entry ticket ) just to visit the party. You'll see the end result by the end of july.

Does any other inmate go there ?

I'm going to Assembly too. I might even have a rival entry in The Competition That Poi Is Clearly Going To Enter (And Do Quite Well In, Hopefully), although this is by no means guaranteed.

I decided to combine a little of last months (filters/opacity) with this months competition... and have a start available for you to peek at:

http://www.code-couch.com/jeff/snippets/textscroll/

Let me explain this entry a little more.

I'm grabbing the headlines from iframes... and using a php page to get the original data from the original websites (scraping). End result (once I have processed them)... I have access to arrays of current news headlines (and their respective URLs). I then draw on these arrays for the content that displays across the screen. This data is realtime (from the last refresh).

The content is chosen at random, the vertical position is randomised, and there is a minor (random) variation in some of the deceleration physics. So... you end up with a very dynamic result (meaning sometimes it looks good, sometimes it's crap).

I can't imagine BBC or Google news services being all that happy about my methods. I'm guessing if they read this and want me to stop, that they will send me letter or something *grin*.

Have a good one,
Jeff

Game over, man!

I guess the compo never really got off the ground, which is fine, as I myself was very busy too. So, I am awarding this one to BabyJeffy (who had an admittedly really cool entry), to see if any of us have time next month.

Thanks Suho, my respective first and second peaks in... maybe a year? Don't remember.
Things have quite changed for me, but this is another story, off-topic as far as javascript contests are concerned.

Will maybe rant a bit about myself in another thread... On to the misc chit-chat area.
And btw, keep up the good work IW, p01, shingebis, and all the others.

We've had lots of things going late, lately.

It's <b>Mauro</b>'s if he wants it! Otherwise, if there's nothing up by the end of tomorrow, I'll do one.

Well... my suggestion for the August competition was to have been a re-work of the classic "snake" game that so many have played on their mobile phones (especially if you have a Nokia).

I'm sorry that you were made to wait for my topic... I was busy -- and I decided to log in after the weekend to post a challenge. I didn't think (given the lack of entries for July) that there would be that much interest, to be honest. I guess I'll wait for another time to suggest that topic.

Cheers,
Jeff

You just have a few days to wait, about... twenty, before the next context. In the meantime, why don't you go with the flow, get naked, and enjoy yourself.

I think this time I'll wait to see if anyone else bothers with an entry... I don't have any desire to build navigation things - that's what I do at work (and this is supposed to be fun).

Cheers,
Jeff

I think you have to make it funny, it just is up to you.
For instance, you could have a snake game,
and the snake would have to catch "menu entries" in order for user to move to the concerned page, or whatever.
On the next page, the snake and speed would rise, and the game would be paused until user wants to move to another page again...

The topic is broad, open to all users, and all sorts of ideas, and in my experience, general topics like this
make it easier to gather any js user, rather than "topics restricted to [pure nerds, ex Atari ST users, hardcore snake gamers, you name it]."

I understand your wishes and complaints, but what's great is that nobody forces you to join, nobody is forcing you not to join either,
I am proposing a topic. As in "proposing", meaning that the choice is yours.
